could go for an alpine day of events- i miss snapping candids of rach and joey under our unstable suntent and when mary would grab corn off the grill with her bare hands then pass out on the roof of the suburban and i would yak in a chips bag before we’d even leave for the concert. -love that place

I actually attack the concept of happiness. The idea that - I don’t mind people being happy - but the idea that everything we do is part of the pursuit of happiness seems to me a really dangerous idea and has led to a contemporary disease in Western society, which is fear of sadness. It’s a really odd thing that we’re now seeing people saying “write down 3 things that made you happy today before you go to sleep”, and “cheer up” and “happiness is our birthright” and so on. We’re kind of teaching our kids that happiness is the default position - it’s rubbish. Wholeness is what we ought to be striving for and part of that is sadness, disappointment, frustration, failure; all of those things which make us who we are. Happiness and victory and fulfillment are nice little things that also happen to us, but they don’t teach us much. Everyone says we grow through pain and then as soon as they experience pain they say “Quick! Move on! Cheer up!” I’d like just for a year to have a moratorium on the word “happiness” and to replace it with the word “wholeness”. Ask yourself “is this contributing to my wholeness?” and if you’re having a bad day, it is.

just when lifes handing it to me, work rescues me again and salvages my blind optimism for the world- a lady in line randomly busts out a “life” quote after we tell her to “have a nice day”… she said: “There is no way to happiness; happiness is the way.” She had different colored nail polish on each finger and she shook a finger at us teasingly as she made the statement as if she had been waiting all day for the right time to share it and she smiled genuinely and right away i hated myself for wondering about the nail polish instead of concentrating on the quote but overall i needed that and i expressed my appreciation to her and realized that what i loved about her small gesture was it’s painless comprehensibility and effortlessness- she went on to say that most of us think to much and we should be happy to “make things and talk.”
I feel you.

Life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent. We would not dare to conceive the things which are really mere commonplaces of existence. If we could fly out of that window hand in hand, hover over this great city, gently remove the roofs, and and peep in at the queer things which are going on, the strange coincidences, the plannings, the cross-purposes, the wonderful chains of events, working through generations, and leading to the most outre results, it would make all fiction with its conventionalities and foreseen conclusions most stale and unprofitable.

10 Most Alien and Weird Places on Earth

Fly Geyser, Reno
Fly Ranch features two geysers, one of which is dormant. The other, Fly Geyser, was accidentally formed by a water well drill that hit a geothermal source, and continuously sprays hot water. Fly Ranch is private property and does not allow visitors.

Minneapolis sculpture gardens. Like this, but snow on the ground and chilly. -Probably the best check-in of the day besides the renowned “festivus” after!
